The Lewehuis Story

The story of Genesis is more than just the story of how the world began. To me, it is the story of God’s heart.

In the beginning, there was only God. Then He spoke light into the darkness. Mountains rose, oceans formed, trees grew, and life began. Everything was created with purpose, beauty, and intention. Nothing happened by chance. It was all created by a loving Creator who took joy in everything He made.

Out of all creation, people were His most special creation.

We were not only formed from the dust of the earth, but created in the image of God. He breathed life into us and invited us into a relationship with Him. That is why God created the Garden of Eden – a place of peace, beauty, abundance, and perfect fellowship between the Creator and His creation.

Eden was more than just a garden. It was the first home. A place where people lived in the presence of God. A place without fear, pain, shame, or separation. It was a place where everything existed exactly as God intended it to be.

But along with the gift of love, God also gave us the gift of choice.

When mankind chose disobedience, sin entered the world. Sin brought brokenness, pain, suffering, and separation. The relationship between God and man was damaged, and the perfection of Eden was lost.

But that is not where the story ends. Because the moment sin appeared, something else became visible as well: grace.

Even when people broke God’s heart, He did not abandon them. Even when judgment was necessary, His love remained. God was firm, but He was also merciful. He continued to seek, protect, guide, and promise restoration. From the very beginning, His plan was never simply to judge mankind, but to bring them back to Himself.

That is what makes Genesis so beautiful.

The book does not only begin with creation; it begins with love. And even when people failed, God’s love remained greater than their failures. Where sin brought brokenness, God brought grace. Where people walked away, God continued to draw near.

The Genesis Collection was inspired by this truth – the light of the first creation, the beauty of God’s workmanship, and the wonder of new beginnings. It celebrates the moment God spoke light into darkness and brought life where there was none.

The Eden Collection was inspired by the garden where it all began – a place of life, peace, purpose, beauty, and God’s presence. It reflects the harmony that existed between God and His creation and reminds us of the home He originally intended for mankind.

Every piece in these collections is a reminder of the beauty of creation, the value of people, the reality of brokenness, and the power of grace.

Behind Lewehuis, this has always been my heart.

Lewehuis was never just about creating beautiful pieces for a home. It was born from a desire to remind people of something deeper.

The story of Genesis reminds us that we were created with purpose, loved by our Creator, and invited into a relationship with Him. It reminds us that even though sin entered the world, God’s love never left. We are not perfect. We all make mistakes. We all fall short. We all have moments where we choose our own way instead of God’s. Yet the beauty of the Gospel is that our failures are not the end of the story. Where there is brokenness, God offers grace. Where there is guilt, He offers mercy. Where there is distance, He offers restoration.

That is the heart behind Lewehuis.

My hope is that every collection, every piece, and every home it enters serves as a reminder that there is still grace in this world. A reminder that we are loved more than we can understand and that true peace is found in the One who created us.

But more than anything, I hope people will see that while we are imperfect, God’s mercy is perfect. The grace that first appeared in Genesis finds its fullness in Jesus Christ. He is the reason we can be forgiven, restored, and made new. Because in the end, the greatest story is not about creation, the garden, or even mankind. It is about a loving God who never stopped pursuing His people.

And that is, and always will be, the heart of Lewehuis.

About the Artist

I am Carla Classen, a South African designer inspired by creation, natural form, and the quiet beauty found in simplicity. My work is shaped by a deep appreciation for what is formed over time — raw textures, intentional design, and pieces that carry meaning beyond their function.

This way of creating is deeply rooted in my journey. During my high school years, I found my foundation in Jesus Christ — a relationship that continues to guide both my life and my work today. Around that same season of life, I was drawn to creativity and went on to study teaching for Grades 10–12, completing my BEd degree with Visual Arts as one of my subjects. That experience shaped how I see design — not only as something expressive, but something intentional and meaningful.

It was also through church that I met my husband, and today we are blessed with two beautiful children. Family, faith, and creativity are all closely woven together in my life, naturally finding their way into everything I create.

My faith remains at the center of it all. I believe faith is not always constant — there are seasons where it feels distant — but when it is present, it is one of the most powerful gifts we have been given.

My hope is that through each piece, people would feel the light that Jesus brings. That in some small way, these creations reflect our purpose — to be light in a dark world, bringing warmth, peace, and a quiet reminder of something greater into every home.
